The novel THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL: 3,500 KILOMETERS OF MOUNTAINS AND AMERICA by Jakob J. Kenda is a witty and honest narrative inspired by the author’s experiences along this long-distance trail. Based on his eventful journey, he also describes the unique features of this wilderness trail, the American outdoors, and hiking. Drawing on his encounters with traveling companions, the towns along the way, and the people who live there, the author shares insights into the realities of contemporary America. The book has been awarded several prizes, among them ones for best travelogue and best literary debut.

JAKOB J. KENDA is best known to the public for his translations, particularly of the Harry Potter books. He has a PhD in literary studies and is listed as author or editor for numerous publications, from anthologies to readers. He writes about literature and film for many newspapers and magazines and lectures on these and other topics. He is also frequently called on when some cultural institution is in need of a crisis manager. One of his greatest passions is hiking and in 2017 he became the first Slovene to walk the Appalachian Trail.
THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL extends the length of the mountain range of the same name, crossing 14 states in the eastern part of the USA. Slightly more than 3,500 kilometres long (2,190 miles), it has a total ascent equivalent to climbing Mt. Everest from sea level 16 times: 142 kilometres of cumulative elevation gain. The trail leads through wilderness where the nearest town can be as much as a week’s walk away, the hiker wholly immersed in the remote, heavily forested backcountry of America. Given its difficulty, length and age it is called the ‘mother of all trails’.
